Wine Experts! Help me with choosing a good red?

I have never had a good red and just stick to white. I find all the reds i've tried have tasted like vinegar, but I'm hosting a dinner where most of the guests prefer red to white and so it would probably be easier to just drink red. Can anybody recommend a nice one? Also, does anyone know which red would have been the vinegar-esque wine so I know to avoid it?
