Should I shred my newspapers before I use it for my snake's substrate? (Cali King)?

Aspen shavings are getting way too expensive. The little guy really likes burrowing into them, though, so I thought that shredding the newspapers might give him similar options for hiding. Do you guys just lay the full sheets down flat?
