Custom motorcycle helmet artisans?

You won't have much trouble making a helmet that meets DOT standards. The Dot allows a manufacturer to put the DOT sticker on a helmet as long as the manufacturer believes the helmet will p the required safety tests. So you could make a helmet out of cardboard, say "I believe" and slap on the sticker. This has stood up in court many times and has been used to show the folly of helmet laws by biker's rights activists. Lecavcu- I never said there was no test. And I'm sure some companies actually test their helmets. But it is not a requirement to slap a DOT sticker on a helmet. Only the "belief" that the helmet will p. The bottom line is neither the manufacturers or the DOT want to say they "Certify" a helmet because every time someone dies because they were wearing a helmet they would be held liable.
